Karate BC is looking for someone to represent karate as the 2022 BC Games Provincial Advisor for the 2022 BC Winter Games in Vernon.
The Provincial Advisor role is key to the success of the BC Games. Every Provincial Sport Organization (PSO) appoints an individual to this position to be the liaison between the BC Games Society and the PSO. The Provincial Advisor is the key technical contact for the sport and makes decisions on behalf of the PSO concerning such things as eligibility, enforcement of BC Games rules for their sport’s participants, Technical Package interpretations, protests, etc. They are also responsible for the overall registration of their sport’s athletes for their sport.
Karate BC has had an extremely positive relationship with the BC Games Society and the BC Winter Games, since 1978, after a tremendous team effort by members of the organization to gain its inclusion. Therefore, the successful applicant for this position will be looked on to continue to build and strengthen this relationship.
Responsibilities:
- serve as the key liaison between the BC Games Society and Karate BC;
- serve as the technical contact for Karate BC and whom the BC Games Society will turn to when seeking technical advice about Karate BC;
- set the eligibility rules and confirm events and medal requirements for Karate BC (at a meeting with BC Games staff to be scheduled in October or November 2020);
- ensure that the age/eligibility restrictions for Karate BC (as detailed in the Memorandum of Understanding and Technical Package) are in place and adhered to;
- make binding decisions on behalf of Karate BC concerning such things as eligibility restrictions, rule interpretations, etc.;
- name and communicate with the Karate BC Chair in the Host Community to plan for Karate BC’s competition (Sport Chairs to be named by January 2021);
- name and communicate with Zone Representatives for Karate BC to assist in the promotion of Karate BC, qualification process and registering athletes and coaches for the Games (Zone Reps to be named by March 2021);
- attend the Host Community Sport Meeting in Vernon (2021?);
- attend the Vernon BC Winter Games, February 2022, as a resource person for Karate BC and to address any issues that arise in Karate BC prior to, and at, the Games;
- create and execute a Games’ budget for karate with approval from the Karate BC Executive Committee;
- implement and oversee the participant registration for Karate BC;
- work with Karate BC Coaching Committee to gather, recruit, organize, and register certified coaches for karate for the Games;
- work with Karate BC Officials Committee to recruit, organize, and register the officials for the karate event;
- work with Karate BC office staff to prepare key elements of the Games such as registration, transportation of competition equipment and supplies as required, etc.;
- respond to any questions about the Games and/or Karate BC’s inclusion or rules and sport-specific information about competition or eligibility;
- optionally recruit, if required, a Tournament Director (honorarium position) to execute the technical functions of the competition;
- responsible for all post-Games reporting as required by the BC Games Society.
Additional Notes:
- The Provincial Advisor (and Assistant Provincial Advisor) will be required to oversee the online registration for Karate BC; therefore, it is recommended that they have regular and reliable computer and internet access and some basic computer skills.
- The Assistant Provincial Advisor is optional; if deemed necessary by the Provincial Advisor, then they will be responsible for recruiting this person.

Compensation:
This position is compensated via an honorarium paid by Karate BC.
