The 5th Annual Nikkei Place Community Awards were on Sept. 19, 2015 at the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre.
Steveston Martial Arts Centre received the Japanese Culture Award. This is the first time a Martial Arts group received this award,
- The dojo was built in 1972, and was the first outside of Japan for Judo, Karate and Kendo.
- Their legacy is found in the spirit of the Nikkei Pioneers who brought Judo, Kendo and Karate to Steveston.
- The following generations are embracing the unique cultural training of both mind and body to achieve personal goals, grace, and humility as well as enjoying the sports.
