The Karate BC High-Performance Committee and the Karate BC Board of Directors are pleased to announce the appointment of the new interim BC Team Director and Head Coach, Ashtin Callaghan. Ashtin takes over for Rodney Hobson as he takes on his new role with Karate Canada as the Sport Technical Leader. Karate BC is sad to see Rodney leaving us, but we are very excited for his new opportunity, and especially to have Ashtin working with us now. In addition, Ashtin will be taking over the role as the High Performance Coordinator with Karate BC moving forward.
The BC Team program has grown tremendously under Rodney’s leadership, with strong results by the BC Team at National Championships. Ashtin will be stepping in and continuing this great work until a full replacement for these positions can be found.
Coach Ashtin has been touted by her predecessor to have an equally personable, friendly manner that’s matched with her proven proactive communication style. She is a certified NCCP Comp-Dev coach as required by Karate Canada for leading provincial teams, an NCCP learning facilitator of the Beginner-Intro & Comp-Intro courses, and the Lead Instructor at the Rodney Hobson Karate Academy in Kelowna which includes a specific sports-karate training program for current and aspiring BC Team athletes.
In the coming days Coach Ashtin will be communicating with athletes and club instructors about the team selection process, the initial technical/tactical/physical training plans and the extra training and team-spirit building activities.
The notices for the selection process for the remaining BC Team coaching staff positions will be announced in the following weeks.
We wish Coach Ashtin and the whole BC Team the best of luck with the coming competition season.
