KBC Member
- All Karate BC members are potential BC Team members. Working with your Sensei to establish dedicated technical, tactical, physical and mental practise sessions will prepare you for the journey ahead.
- Karate BC members who are interested in the athlete pathway should be entering many non-elite competitions throughout the year. Karate BC Provincial Championships, Canada Open and different style events throughout the province to get experience necessary for future success.
- The athlete pathway is not a direct route. Every athlete will have many ups and downs throughout their career. Win or learn along the way, and enjoy a fantastic athletic career.
How To Try Out For, And Make The BC Team
- Congratulations on deciding to try out for the BC Team! This an exciting step in trying your skills out against the best in the province to see if you can compete at the National Championships.
- BC Team members each apply each year at the start of the season via a link posted to the Karate BC website.
- Athletes must meet minimum requirements listed in the Team Handbook such as attending all mandatory training sessions and events.
- The BC Team is selected via performance results at the Grand Prix events in the Team Program (Junior Selection Process, Senior Selection Process).
- At the end of all Grand Prix events the top 4 kata athletes and top 3 kumite athletes per division make the final BC Team and are eligible to compete at the National Championships.
How To Compete At The Karate Canada National Championships
- Each top athletes, per division, from the Grand Prix selection events is eligible to compete at the National Championships.
- Athletes must be in good standing with the BC Team as well as Karate BC (good standing requirements in the Team Handbook)
- Upon the final selection event athletes will be informed who has been selected, and they must confirm their planned attendance to the National Championships.
- If athletes decline the opportunity, the next athlete in Grand Prix points will be invited.
- Final team training sessions will be held prior to the Nationals, and details will be provided in the Junior and Senior Team Program.
- Rough guidelines:
- Athletes are responsible for all travel expenses (flight, hotel, meals, etc).
- Athletes are responsible for division fees as per Karate Canada bulletin.
- Athletes who are 12/13 years old must travel with a parent.
- Athletes 14+ may travel with the team coaches.
- Athletes must arrive at the designated team hotel in advance of the competition (typically Tuesday is a travel day, Wednesday/Thursday are team training, Fri-Sat-Sun are competition, Monday travel day home).
How To Compete Internationally
- If athletes place on the podium at the National Championships they will receive information as to eligibility to the National Team Roster.
