The eight provincial sport zones and their boundaries were established by the BC Games Society 39 years ago. After significant research and consultation, the BC Games Society is pleased to announce a realignment of the three lower mainland zones; Fraser Valley (Zone 3), Fraser River (Zone 4) and Vancouver-Coastal (Zone 5), to better reflect the current population distribution of these regions.
“The zone boundary and name changes reflect many months of discussion, research, and consultation with our Multi-sport Organization and Provincial Sport Organization partners,” said Kelly Mann, President and CEO of the BC Games Society. “The changes take into account the significant population growth of the lower mainland. We thank our partners for their patience as we undertook this work, and encourage them to share these changes throughout their respective organizations.”
The changes noted below are based on research and comparison using 2011 census data specifically for the 10-14 and 14-19 age groups, as well as past BC Games attendance data, and club and membership data from ViaSport.
Summary of changes:
- Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Surrey, South Surrey, White Rock move from Fraser Valley Zone (3) to Fraser River-Delta Zone (4)
- Richmond, Delta, North Delta, Tsawwassen move from Fraser River-Delta Zone (4) to Vancouver-Squamish (5)
- Zone 4 name changes to Fraser River (formerly Fraser River-Delta)
- Zone 5 name changes to Vancouver-Coastal (formerly Vancouver-Squamish)
