The 2018 edition of the BC Team carved it’s place into the record books. Competing in the beautiful (yet snowy & cold) Halifax, Nova Scotia, BC athletes performed at their peak to shatter previous BC Team and Karate BC records, including:
- Most Gold Medals ever won by BC at a National Championships (26, previous record 24).
- Most medals won ever by BC at a National Championships (89 including 4th place results, 80 previous record).
- Most athletes trying out for BC Team (194, 146 previous record)
- Biggest BC Team ever (111, 107 previous record)
- Most coaches to coach at a Nationals (13)
- Highest NCCP qualified coaches to ever attend a Nationals
- 2 Comp-Dev certified coaches
- 7 Comp-Dev in-training coaches
- 4 Comp-Intro coaches
- More than double the previous year silver medal results (30, previous year 13).
- First place Province in Gold Medals and aggregate medal count for the second year in a row
Rodney Hobson, the BC Team Director, was elated with the team’s performance, and complimentary to his coaching staff. “I would like to extend a huge thank you to the amazing, cohesive and hardworking BC Team coaching staff who worked long days on little sleep to support our amazing athletes – Pam Ross, Matt Bickel, Hamid Tarighatbin, Kalan Anglos, Kamelia Fard”, he complimented. “The club coaches were amazing to work with and I’m very grateful for their time and dedication to their athletes”, he continued. Club coaches included Nigel Nikolaisen, Junya Yamamura, Shaun Dhillon, Valentyna Zolotarova and Sandeep Gill.
Hobson further complimented the team captains, “A big thanks to the team captains for all of their work in the background and helping the coaches get information to the team efficiently!” The team captains comprised of: Toshi Uchiage, Rita Ngo, Warren Grafton and Alex Zaborniak.
“Finally, a huge thank you to the Karate BC High Performance Committee (HPC) – Richard Mosdell, Kraig Devlin, and Sandeep Gill – for their dedication to build the best program to obtain the highest results not only Provincially and Nationally, but setting our athletes up for International competition”, Hobson concluded.
Karate BC’s President, Andreas Kuntze, was also eager to add his praise, “Congratulations to the BC Team, the entire coaching staff and our High Performance Committee for a job well done!”
