This past Saturday, October 24th At Fruitvale’s first class venue ,The Memorial Hall, the BV/Rossland Chito-Ryu Karate club held the Beaver Valley Karate Championship and Clinic . Attending this year were competitors from the regions around Rossland, Fruitvale, Salmo and Castlegar and a new Club from Nelson.
“In holding our tournament we are trying to bring together the few Karate BC Dojo’s in the Columbia Basin and encourage a more responsible expression of Martial Arts through Karate competitions and to learn in a safer and fun environment”, remarked Sensei Scott Hutcheson. “Thanks to a grant from the CBT CI-AAP grant and the RDKB/RDCK we were able to hold a Memorial Clinic in New Denver at the Japanese Internment Camp Gardens drawing attention to that tragedy and how it effected both Canadian and Karate’s History and to Hold our Tournament in Fruitvale”, he continued. In total, 21 brave competitors from age 6 to Masters Divisions came to the competition mat to test their skills and to try new experiences while meeting new people and making new friends.

It was a great weekend ending with a Clinic with Kyoshi Sensei Chris Taneda from West Kelowna, 7 time Canadian National Kumite Champion. “It is an honor to study with Sensei and to have an opportunity to learn from him. Our region is amazing and we had a great day ‘playing’ as Sensei called it”, stated Sensei Hutcheson. The grand prize of top Male and top Female Awards were also given out at the tournament. This year’s top Male and Female Athletes were Dawson Stemmler (2 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze) and Meagan Campsall (3 gold and 1 bronze), and our most coveted prize given out this year by a torturous reverse draw was a brand new PS4 that was awarded to Morgain Watts from Rossland. Thanks to all the help from the parents who helped make it all happen. Next up it’s the BC winter Games in Penticton!
