Last year Karate BC ran a skills challenge for our participants at the Provincial Championships. The idea is to provide age/skill appropriate activities for participants to take part in while they wait for their competition. The falls in line with the Canadian Sport for Life philosophy on Long Term Participant Development (LTPD) or how we as Canadians keep active and engaged in physical health.
It was a great success last year. The responses we received were that the kids had a lot of fun participating in the skills course, it gave them something to do while they waited to marshall, they got to practice general coordination skill along with karate-specific skills, and they were timed. It seems kids love going through courses and being timed!
We don’t have enough volunteers to run this event this year so we are hoping that we will be able to have a club volunteer to bring a small group (only about 4-5 people would be needed). To run the skills challenge. We have a template that we used last year and would provide you will all you need. This could be a great way for your club to pick up additional methods of engaging your students.
Please consider this a call to anyone interested in running a skills challenge at the Provincial Championships. The skills challenge takes place on Saturday and does not need to run the entire day. Please email me to express your interest.
