As part of a test program Zone 3 wanted to look at reaching out to traditional clubs that do not do a lot of tournament karate and may be interested in doing so. The idea was to bring in a high level coach who could teach training methods, strategies and the rules to these athletes. Dragon Dojo Isshin-Ryu run by Sensei Sheila Reimer was very keen on this idea so we booked 3 sessions over a couple of weeks in late March and early April to run 1 hour clinics at Sensei Reimer’s dojo.
Zone 3 is lucky to have Sensei Nicole Poirier within our zone with her Port Coquitlam Top Karate Club. Sensei Nicole is the BC Team head coach and is the current coach of the year for Canada. As a competitor Sensei Nicole has been a multiple time national champion, Pan Am Championships gold medallist and Pan Am Games gold medallist. Sensei Nicole brought her extensive knowledge and fantastic charisma out to the Abbotsford club and the kids and Sensei Nicole had a great time with some significant improvement over a very brief period of time. Scoring techniques, foot work for scoring, blocking and evading were all covered as well as what the judges look for in giving a score. It was fast paced, fun and went by very quickly.
