1. AGE ELIGIBILITY
Please note that the age eligibility for the U14, Cadet, Junior and U21 categories is younger than in previous years. For your reference, here is the age eligibility matrix provided by Karate Canada, which is being used for the 2024/25 Karate BC Team that will be competing at Nationals:
Note regarding Canada Open for 11, 13, 15, 17, and 20 year old athletes
If you will be 20 on November 30, 2024 and your birthday is on or before April 3, 2025, you must register in the Senior categories for the Canada Open.
If you will be 11, 13, 15, 17 on November 30, 2024 but you will be 12, 14, 16 or 18 on August 28, 2025
Register for the Canada Open initially in your current age group AND
Register for the BC Team in the age group you will compete in at Nationals (see the Age Matrix above). THEN
Email events@karatebc.org by November 22nd and ask to be moved up to the categories in which you have registered for the BC Team. This will allow you compete at the Canada Open in the category/categories for which you are trying out for the BC Team. (A suggested format for the email is suggested below.)

2. SWITCHING AGE OR WEIGHT CATEGORIES
All prospective BC Team Athletes (including auto invites) should ensure they compete at the Canada Open in the age and weight category they are trying out for and plan to compete in at the 2025 National Championships.
While it is possible to change categories between the Canada Open and the Selection Tournament, any Grand Prix points earned at the Canada Open will be lost if categories are switched. This may impact the ability of athletes without auto invites to earn Grand Prix points needed to qualify for the BC Team. And for all athletes, including those with auto invites, loss of Grand Prix points may affect the eligibility for CSI Carding.
3. CANADIAN PASSP0RT REQUIREMENT
Please note that all athletes who register for the BC Team must provide a copy of their Canadian Passport to the BC Team Manager before the start of the Selection Tournament on February 1, 2025. Athletes without a Canadian Passport cannot compete at the Karate Canada National Championships and cannot, therefore, be on the Karate BC Team.
