Dear Athletes,
We’re excited as preparations for the Canada Open are well underway! Thank you for your feedback regarding equipment requirements for non-elite categories. Your voice matters, and we’re here to ensure these updates prioritize safety, accessibility, and practicality for all athletes.
What’s Changing?
Karate Canada has recommended that participants aged 12 and older in non-elite divisions start transitioning to equipment standards consistent with elite divisions. While Karate BC fully supports this recommendation, we understand the need to balance safety with affordability for our members.
As of November 18th, New Adjustments to Equipment Requirements:
Non-Elite Adult Kumite Categories (18 and Over)
Mandatory:
- Gloves
- Mouthguards
- Groin protectors for men
- Shin/foot protectors (blue/red per bout or white)
Optional (but recommended):
- Chest protection/external body protectors
Non-Elite Youth Kumite Categories (Under 18)
Mandatory:
- Gloves
- Mouthguards
- Groin protection for boys
Optional (but recommended):
- Shin/foot protectors
- Chest protection/external body protectors
- Helmets
Key Points to Remember
- Start preparing now! We strongly encourage athletes to begin acquiring the recommended gear to ensure readiness for this event and future competitions.
- Looking ahead to 2025: A full set of required equipment will be mandatory to align with evolving standards, ensuring maximum safety and performance for all athletes.
Why This Matters
This decision reflects Karate BC’s commitment to:
- Athlete Safety: Ensuring the best protection for all participants.
- Accessibility: Considering financial impacts while maintaining high standards.
- Inclusivity: Supporting all athletes across divisions to compete confidently.
We are confident these changes will enhance the competitive experience while addressing the concerns raised by our community.
Thank you for your understanding and ongoing support. We can’t wait to see you showcase your skills at the Canada Open!
Sincerely,
Karate BC Board of Directors
