Everyone is aware of how the Canadian Government responded to Japan’s bombing of Pearl Harbour on December 7th, 1941 – shamefully all Japanese-Canadians were denied their rights and possessions and were herded into internment centres. The interior of BC held most of them. Canada’s most famous Karate-Ka, Masami Tsuruoka, was interned in Rosebery with his Family and it’s thanks to his work that karate is where and what it is today. Come to the Beautiful Slocan Valley, enjoy its serenity for yourself and tour the various Internment sites like the Nikkei Memorial in New Denver, the site in Rosebery, and on the other side of the Valhalla Glacier to Kaslo, BC. You will not be disappointed in the training venue, the Kohan Gardens. A traditional Japanese Garden taken care of since the Internment Camp’s beginning. Come see where Karate in Canada originated.
