The Revelstoke Shotokan Karate Club was founded in 1981 by Jim Scott of Nanaimo. Jim left town in 1983 and the club was taken over by Chic Sharp who is still instructing to this day. Chic is a fourth degree black belt.
The club joined Karate BC sometime around 1991 and currently has approximately 45 students comprised of seasoned competitors, non-competitors and young and old alike. The Revelstoke Shotokan Karate Club have produced several provincial champions, national champions, and have received two silver medals at the WUSKA world championships in Switzerland and California.
“Our club is unique in many ways” says Sensei Sharp, “One is its longevity. We also exist in a beautiful mountain setting and are often times cut off from the rest of the province in the winter time due to avalanches”. The Revelstoke Shotokan Karate Club also prides itself for being quite active in the community raising funds for people in need, donating money to local causes, and putting on Christmas dinners for those that cannot afford their own.
The club’s favorite warm up game is definitely dodge ball though most of the time they warm up normally.
When asked about his club, Sensei Sharp reflected that “there really is not so much I want others to know about us but rather for all Karate-ka to remember that our purpose in training is to become better people in all ways and to help others to do the same”.
