Victoria Genbukai was founded in September 2007 when Sensei Mirek Drozdzel and his wife Ewa Drozdzel moved to Victoria from Alberta where he had owned a club for many years. Sensei Drozdzel was very surprised by the number of the clubs around Victoria area, a reflection of the strength of karate culture on Vancouver Island. Taking a more passive approach, Sensei Drozdzel prefers to focus on the quality of his small group and currently has 14 members ranging from teen to adult.
Like many clubs in BC, Victoria Genbukai has students who are working hard to learn the art of karate and improving themselves as human beings. Students also learn Ryukyu Kobudo with six different weapons which is a result of Sensei Drozdzel studying under Shihan Fumio Demura, one of the legendary Kobudo masters.
Victoria Genbukai pride themselves as being very friendly and welcoming to anybody who wants to practice, visit or just become a friends. Sensei Drozdzel is very open to conducting any karate or kobudo seminars to share knowledge with other instructors for no charge. Sensei Drozdzel credits much of his success in karate to his wife, and “right hand” Ewa Drozdzel, “She is a great instructor and human being who is looked up to by many students and is a great role model for women in karate”. Ewa holds a Sandan and has practiced karate for 20 years.
