Please note that Karate Canada is pleased to confirm it plans to hold a “Youth Cup” event (for 12 and 13 year old athletes) once again in 2016, alongside its National Championships (which are to be held in Richmond, BC, on January 29-31, 2016).
So as to align itself with international divisions, Karate Canada will, for the 2016 Youth Cup, implement the following PKF-approved kumite weight divisions:
Girls:
-35 kg
-40 kg
-45 kg
+45kg
Boys:
-35 kg
-40 kg
-45 kg
-50 kg
+50 kg
(Karate Canada will of course also continue to hold / offer 12-13 year old male and female kata divisions as part of the Youth Cup.)
The number of athletes allowed per PSO / TSO is for now scheduled to remain 2 per division in kumite, and 3 per division in kata. Should many spots remain vacant after the first wave of registrations, however, Karate Canada may then open up registrations again and allow PSOs / TSOs to register additional athletes up to a specific number per division (to be provided at that time). We invite you to conduct your Provincial / Territorial Team Selections accordingly for the remainder of this season.
At this time, Karate Canada still plans for the 2016 Youth Cup to be a participatory event, and there are no plans yet to use this event as a selection for participation of a “Youth (12-13) Team” in any subsequent international competition. This matter will, however, be under review by our High Performance and Coaching Committee soon. Should any change occur on that front, Karate Canada will of course notify all member PSOs / TSOs promptly.
(Please note: as this will be considered a participatory event, as was the case in 2015, no athlete registered to compete at National Championships in an older age division (in a given discipline – i.e. kata or kumite) may also register and compete in a Youth Cup division within the same discipline. Furthermore, athletes must be of age to compete (either 12 or 13 years old) on the dates of competition, which for the Youth Cup should be January 29 & 30, 2016.)
We thank you for your cooperation. Should you have any questions on this matter, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Best regards,
Olivier Pineau
