Based on feedback from our membership, Karate BC is pleased to be able to offer its first Self Defense Instruction Training course for dojo instructors or designated assistant dojo instructors.
Most Karate-Do instructors never use their skills outside the Dojo and, in fact, they strongly encourage their students to avoid street confrontation at all cost. However this is not always possible. The result of this is many are not qualified to teach their students how to deal with a violent situation from the physical, emotional and stressful point of view. Most instructors do not really understand the legal ramifications of using force in a physical street confrontation. The instructors that have been secured to teach this course – Toby Hinton, Joel Johnston and Al Arsenault – are among the most knowledgeable in Canada on the topic of self defense and have not only taught for the VPD academy for many years, but have also tested their skills in the line of duty many times throughout their careers. They understand how to de-escalate a situation, how to control emotions, use the environment to help one survive and, if need be, understand your legal rights should you end up in court.
