On the recent weekend of October 22/23rd Karate BC was honoured to co-hosted, the highly sought after, internationally renowned karate instructor and presenter, Pat McCarthy, with Canadian Martial Arts Academy’s, Sensei Frank Clayton.
“Pat took us on a journey into Japanese culture and customs and how they differ from Western concepts on culture and customs”, informed Sensei Clayton. “This was followed by a fascinating lesson in kata application never before taught by the Japanese masters of today”, continued Sensei Clayton.
The Saturday evening lecture from Sensei McCarthy was a lesson in the history of karate and modern martial arts. It included an exploration into the creation of the Dogi, the Obi, Kyu and Dan Ranking, and last Shai or competition. From this, those in attendance understood and agreed that there exists much more information out there that would help them to better understand their journey as karate instructor and practitioner.
Day two (Sunday) was all about kata application, including a 2-person flow drill referred to as ‘kihon futari-geiko Kaishu-waza‘. “Hans hi McCarthy is a wealth of knowledge, and his perspective and analysis of kata and history is absolutely amazing”, remarked Sensei Clayton.
Many commented afterward that they hope that he will return in the future to build upon what they learned there that weekend.
Finally, a big thanks to the Squamish Budo Society for their help in hosting Pat McCarthy!
