BC Winter Games
The BC Winter Games are a biennial multi-sport Games organized by the BC Games Society. Greater Vernon will host the 31st BC Winter Games from February 24-27, 2022. 2,000 athletes, coaches, and officials from 17 different sports, as well as 1,800 local volunteers are expected to participate in these Games.
The BC Games are a key developmental event for the development of athletes, coaches, and officials across British Columbia, and are intended as a springboard for sport participants to higher-level competitions and multi-sport Games, including the Canada Games, Pan American Games, and Olympic Games.
The Position
Karate BC is looking for a keen member of our karate community that would be interested in taking on the important role of Sport Chair for karate at the upcoming 2022 Games in Vernon.
The Karate BC Sport Chair is responsible for all operational and logistical aspects of the Karate tournament at the Greater Vernon 2022 BC Winter Games. The Sport Chair represents Karate BC in the host community as the liaison between the Provincial Sport Organization (PSO) and the Host Society in Greater Vernon. They work closely with the Karate BC Provincial Advisor, and the Sport Directorate, which is composed of volunteers from the host community.
The Sport Chair must reside within the Greater Vernon area, and must be fully available and onsite during the 2022 BC Winter Games, from February 24-27, 2022.
The Sport Chair will be reimbursed for travel expenses and other out-of-pocket expenses related to performing their duties.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Work closely with the Provincial Advisor and host community volunteers on the operational side of preparing for the Karate event at the Games.
- Provide frequent updates to the Provincial Advisor and ensure ongoing communication on progress with planning and implementation of the event.
- Attend various in-person meetings in Vernon, including the Key Volunteer Rally and meetings with the Host Society, as well as online meetings.
- Work closely with the Provincial Advisor to prepare key documents, including the Venue Map, the Sport Information Package, the Sport Schedule, and the final report while complying with all deadlines set by the BC Games Sport Directorate, the BC Games Society, and Karate BC.
- Provide a tour to the Provincial Advisor and to each of the Host Society’s Directorates and BC Games Staff of the sport venue, to provide an overview of the competition plan and layout of the venue.
- Oversee the recruitment, registration, scheduling, training, and supervision of volunteers for the Karate event at the Games.
- Organize all aspects of the Karate competition, including coordinating equipment transportation, and on-site management of logistics during the Karate event.
- Other responsibilities as reasonably required.
Required Experience and Skills
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a team.
- Ability to meet all deadlines set by the BC Games Society, the Sport Directorate, and Karate BC.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Excellent leadership, organizational, and time-management skills.
- Willing to embrace new challenges and opportunities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and Zoom (video conferencing software).
- Experience in organizing Karate events and/or event management is considered a strong asset.
- Knowledge and experience in the amateur sport system in British Columbia is considered a strong asset.
- Experience working with and/or managing volunteers is considered a strong asset.
- Experience in multi-sport Games is considered a strong asset.
