The Karate BC High-Performance Committee is pleased to announce the appointment of the new BC Team Team Director, Rodney Hobson.
The BC Team program has evolved to broaden the number of athletes trying out while also actively inviting club instructors to the Karate Canada National Championships where they can coach their athletes, extending the instructor to athlete interaction all the way to the premier competition of the year.
Therefore following other provincial high-performance sports teams, the head coach and manager roles were combined into a 3-year director’s position in order to increase the leadership required for improving the athletes and club instructors Competition Excellence experience with the BC Team program, while also be actively engaging with government multi-sport agencies from a local to national level.
Now that karate is included in the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games, there is an increased spotlight on our sport from all levels of government, media and the karate community, in turn raising the serious nature of high-performance competition and the management required.
Coach Rodney has a personable, friendly manner that’s matched with a proven proactive communication style. He is a certified NCCP Comp-Dev coach as required by Karate Canada for leading provincial teams, an NCCP learning facilitator of the Beginner-Intro & Comp-Intro courses, the recent team manager for the previous BC Team season and the chief instructor of his own club in Kelowna which includes a specific sports-karate training program for current and aspiring BC Team athletes.
In the coming days Coach Rodney will communicating with athletes and club instructors about the team selection process, the initial technical/tactical/physical training plans and the extra training and team-spirit building activities.
The notices for the selection process for the remaining BC Team coaching staff positions will be announced in the following weeks.
