2015 is the 45th year that Sensei Akira Sato has been teaching karate-do in Canada. As he has done every year, he lead the 45th Annual Karate-Do Beach Practice on Saturday, January 17, 2015, 1 to 2 PM, at English Bay.
This is the karate-do version of the Polar Bear Swim. At 1 o’clock sharp, a practice much like regular dojo practices began, except that it took place outside on the beach. Practice began with a meditation, then moved to kicks, punches, and blocks. It then continued with pair work and kata (forms). Finally, they completed a group run on the beach before they finished with walking basics, in and out of the surf. Freezing fun for all.
This was the first of a few social events for ShitoRyu Seikokai karate-do association’s celebration of Sensei Sato’s 45th year teaching in Canada. Later in the year, they will also have the 16th Sato Cup Invitational Tournament – look for that in the fall.
