Recently (October 25-30th) in beautiful Linz, Austria, the 23rd World Senior Karate Championships took place. In attendance was a record breaking number of athletes (1024) from around the world, including several top athletes from Karate BC!
The Karate BC athletes in attendance were:
Rita Ngo (Odokan dojo) – who achieved 7th place in individual Kata!!
Kenneth Lee (Odokan dojo) – who achieved 9th place in individual Kata!!
Sumi Uchiage (Steveston dojo) – team kata (along with her sister Hidemi from Alberta and Daphne Trahan from Quebec)
Jusleen Virk (Elite Karate Club) – women’s kumite

Of special note, Canada had 2 medals in the first ever WKF Para-Karate divisions including:
Patricia Wright from Ontario – Gold (Individual Kata)
Natalie Donna Olson from Alberta – Silver (Individual Kata)
In addition to the exciting competition, BC Officials achieved upgraded certifications in the very challenging WKF Referee course. This course is offered so that Continental referees and judges can obtain WKF referee/Judge qualifications.
The following are the BC officials that achieved upgraded certifications:
Valentyna Zolotarova (WKF – Kata Judge A; Kumite Judge B)
Trevor Walmsley (WKF – Kata Judge B)
Andreas Kuntze (WKF – Kata Judge B)
The highest ranking official from BC and Karate BC President, Norma Foster, was also in attendance. She was tasked with officiating several finals at the event.
